A Research Centre for Ostroh Academy Heritage Studies
Head: Svitlana Darchik
The aim of this institution is to research the cultural heritage, the history and the rebirth of Ostroh Slavic, Greek and Latin Academy in 1994 and to study the modern history of its successor - Ostroh Academy National University.
Initially, the Centre was headed by Petro Andrukhov (1922-1995), the head of the Ostroh Princes Society for Local Lore, History and Economy.
The Centre deals not only with scientific work but with museum dispalys as well. Many exhibits shed light on the foundation and development of Ostroh Slavic, Greek and Latin Academy. Among these are the portrait of Vasyl-Kostiantyn Ostrogsky, the founder of the Academy; the copy of his Certificate of Foundation approved by Polish King Stefan Batorij and the Sejm in 1585 and stipulating the giveaway of the income of eight villages of Surazh volost for Ostroh Hospital, Saint Trinity Church and the Academy; a copy of Magdeburg Law Certificate of 1585 issued by S. Batorij to Ostroh; and other documents.
The walls of the museum are decorated with the portraits of the first promoter of the Academy, Halshka of Ostroh, to whom the fascinated men of those times referred as the most beautiful woman of the 16th century. The life of Halshka was fortuneless though not unfruitful. In her testament Halshka of Ostroh bequeathed the sum of 360,000 groszes for Ostroh Academy, which had played an extremely important role in the development of this educational establishment. Unfortunately, there are no her actual portraits left. Thanks to the sponsorship of Vice-president of World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations Natalia Danylenko, Ostroh Academy organized a contest of Halshka’s Portrait. As a result, a gallery of portraits of the first donator of the Academy has been established; among the portraits are the works of the artists from Ostroh, Rivne, Netishyn (Khmelnytsky region) and Kyiv.
The museum exhibits a number of authentic objects, documents and books of the 16th-17th centuries. In particular, there are coins, tiles and crockery of the period. They were excavated by the students during the archeological dig of the New (Round) Tower (16th century).
A big part of the museum collection is connected with the modern history of Ostroh Academy. It exhibits the decrees of the presidents, various documents, the researches of teaching staff and students, and the presents from numerous guests.
The collection also highlights the work of different departments of the Academy, while paying much attention to role of the Ukrainian diaspora in the development of Ukrainian culture and education.
I addition, the museum display contains the international prize For Quality awarded to Ostroh academy in Paris for the high quality of teaching technologies. Of special interest in the museum exposition is, however, the numismatic collection of anniversary coins and Ukrainian medals presented by the President Viktor Yushchenko.
